MACing

We rarely have the opportunity to observe our colleagues in action.  I asked a number of surgeons who often use MAC anesthesia if they recognize a difference in technique and a benefit to their patients.   --SS

No two patients are the same, but my basic technique is as follows: 


Salter Tube for CO2

Face mask for O2


2 mg versed and 75 mcg fentanyl on arrival to OR


Propofol before local till eyelid reflex is abolished


Propofol drop at 30mcg/kg/hr


Antiemetics


Titrate additional fentanyl to keep the respiratory rate between 8 and 12
